AI and college admissions: Gurufi analysis of how ChatGPT may revive standardized testing like the SAT, GRE, GMAT, and LSAT

Did AI Save the SAT? Why ChatGPT May Bring Standardized Testing Back

Brian F2026-07-06T11:30:20+00:00

For nearly thirty years, standardized testing has been losing ground in admissions. Critics argued that exams like the SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, and LSAT were too narrow, too coachable, and too strongly connected to socioeconomic advantage. When COVID hit and many schools abandoned them (or made them optional), many people thought they were on their way out.

Then, two things happened in quick succession that made clear standardized tests were here to stay. First, as the first cohorts of test-free students arrived, universities began to compile anecdotal experience and hard data demonstrating that their ability to assess student quality was hamstrung without test scores.

Then artificial intelligence arrived, and the debate over testing took on greater clarity and urgency. A recent letter from University of California faculty members advocating for the return of standardized testing reflects a broader reassessment happening across higher education. Their concern is that AI has introduced a new admissions challenge: authenticity. A timed test taken under controlled conditions answers a question that may become increasingly important: what can this applicant do independently? Many professors suspect that standardized tests are increasingly becoming the only metric that measures student ability, and not their facility with AI.

The traditional admissions essay was built on a simple assumption: the words on the page reflected the applicant. That assumption is becoming harder to maintain. For decades, admissions essays rewarded applicants who could produce flawless prose. But if everyone can generate flawless prose instantly, flawless prose stops being impressive.

My guess is that, within five years, admissions will look very different: more standardized testing, live interviews, timed writing assessments, and verification of achievements. Organizations like the College Board understand this new paradigm and are adapting testing for a changing world. Tests will be more expansive and important.

But for now, the Personal Statement remains hugely important, and we are dedicated to ensuring that your essay reflects your strengths and abilities and tells your story in an honest, compelling manner. At Gurufi, where we have helped thousands of applicants discover and tell their stories, we believe great essays come from authentic self-reflection.

The best essays are exercises in judgment: What experiences do you choose? What lessons do you draw from them? Learn more about Gurufi and our approach.

The future belongs to applicants who demonstrate real ability, real experiences, and real reflection. AI can improve sentences. It cannot live your life.

At Gurufi, we believe the best admissions essays do more than summarize accomplishments. They reveal the experiences, motivations, and values that make you unique. For nearly two decades, our team of expert editors has helped applicants craft powerful personal statements for college, MBA, medical school, law school, graduate school, and other competitive programs.
